Beginnings
In NASA's test laboratories, the effects of weightlessness on the human body have been investigated in cooperation with the German Space Agency (DLR) for more than 30 years.

During the past years, the research focused on the aetiology of space sickness, the regulation of arterial pressure and the efficacy of a "Lower Body Negative Pressure Device" in supporting cardiovascular functions.

Research was undertaken both at the earth-based NASA laboratories on earth and in orbit during numerous missions.

Used in Space
Over a period of many years, NASA developed and enhanced the LBNPD technology. The reduced muscular activity in weightless space markedly impairs physical performance under gravity. Prolonged stays in a weightless environment without measures to preserve the physical capabilities of the astronauts were a safety risk. The usage of LBNPD technology significantly reduced this safety risk.

The importance of LBNPD technology will increase in the future, because long research trips to the International Space Station (ISS) are planned. The old dream of mankind to travel to Mars could also soon become true and the starting point could be the new space station. The six-month-long outward journey could be managed without significant negative impact on the physical performance of the astronauts thanks to LBNPD. Without LBNPD, even the low level of gravity on Mars would greatly impair the astronauts' ability to move about because of their prolonged exposure to weightlessness during the flight.
